Irish music sessions — FAQ
New to trad sessions? Here’s what to expect at pubs across North Carolina.
What is a session?
An Irish trad session (seisiún) is an informal gathering where musicians play traditional tunes together — jigs, reels, hornpipes, and more. Sessions often happen weekly at pubs.
Can I just listen?
Usually yes! Many sessions welcome listeners. Order a drink, enjoy the music, and applaud between sets. Check the listing or ask the pub if unsure.
Can I bring my instrument?
Some sessions are open to all players; others are for experienced musicians only. Look for “beginner friendly” on the listing or ask a regular before joining in.
How do I find a session near me?
Use the sessions directory — filter by region or day of week, or switch to the weekly calendar view.
